The two mayors of Kuching pledge to work hand in hand to make Kuching a better city. The recently appointed Mayor of Kuching South, James Chan, accompanied by DBKU Mayor, Hj. Mohd. Atei Abang Medaan, paid a courtesy call on Datuk Haji Daud Abdul Rahman at his office here this afternoon.
“Many issues could be solved amicably if we work together” they said. Datuk Daud who is the Minister-in-charge of DBKU, congratulated Chan on his recent appointment and looked forward to see a greater cooperation between MBKS and DBKU. The close cooperation between the two city authorities is very much manifested during the relocation of Gambier Street traders in DBKU area to Stutong in MBKS.
On the wholesale vegetable traders, Mohd. Atei said that they also had to stop operation at Gambier. However, the rejected DBKU’s officer for them to trade at Sungai Maong market and Sukma Ria resulting in a potest when they tried to enter Gambier area on June 14 night. DBKU had to be firm on the decision in order to be fair to Gambier traders who had moved to Stutong.
Their request to operate at Jalan Haji Taha cannot be met instantly as the decision had to be brought to the Commission and the state authority. DBKU at the same time cannot decide on their request to trade at Stutong because the place is outside its jurisdiction. “I cannot encroach into my counterpart’s area”. However, MBKS mayor and the authority had actually considered their request and are working on details of the operation.
DBKU and MBKS is working closely to prepare for the forthcoming City Day Celebration in August. Various programs is in the pipeline for the two local authorities to work on to make the accusion more meaningful inconjunction with Merdeka 45 th. anniversary.
“We are working closely of towards a greater Kuching concept. There are a lot of rooms for improvement for us to turn this into reality for the good of Kuching city folk”, they agreed.
